Hopdoddy Burger Bar is open in Dallas’ Preston Center

Hopdoddy Burger Bar is open in Dallas’ Preston Center, bringing the very best of Austin’s South Congress Avenue to Luther Lane.

Five months after opening, the Preston Center outpost of a wildly popular Austin original is still packed, with a line that can stretch out the door. From the moment you walk in you’re greeted with cheerful staffers, handing out menus, passing around tastes of milkshake and assigning you a table to sit at once your order has been placed. Servers will bring your food on rectangular aluminum trays covered in brown paper, including salads. The food is just as fun as the atmosphere, well-thought-out and prepared with care, which helps explain the long lines. Big, solid hamburgers, made from juicy, beefy chuck and brisket ground daily in-house.

Pimento Burger

Beef Patty, Pimento
Cheese, Bacon, Fried Egg, Watercress Lettuce,
Tomato, White Onion, Sassy Sauce on Egg Buns.

If you’re not the adventurous type they offer the Classic Burger with lettuce, onion, tomatoes, and “sassy sauce” ( a mixture of mayo, horseradish and mustard). On the other hand if you’re one for trying new things their selection of imaginative combinations will keep you coming back. A dozen burger options ranging from Angus beef to bison, lamb and tuna. Toppings were gourmet all the way: arugula, Brie cheese and truffle aioli. A few burgers featured spicy chiles such as jalapenos and habaneros, and even a veggie burger option.

Hopdoddy uses brand-name Kennebec potatoes for its fries, and those alone make this worth a visit. Keep in mind this is a Burger Bar so the menu is not complete without the mention of cocktails and craft beer, with an emphasis on regional and local brews. Beer and burgers is what they do best.
The only downside to our visit was the annoying fact that aside from clearly being a BURGER BAR, you still find parents dragging their kids here. Granted they offer some amazing milkshakes but the intent is to remind us of our youth, not to be sat next to spoiled children eating $12 burgers. It’s location may be to blame sitting blocks from SMU. Overall the selection of meaty burgers are enough to help you overlook the crudeness of other patrons. Perhaps next time we’ll visit the Austin location and just avoid the elitist.
